As the dust begins to settle from the transfer portal frenzy, the Kentucky Wildcats’ 2025–26 basketball roster is nearly complete. However, an unexpected move by in-state freshman guard Travis Perry, who recently entered the transfer portal, has opened up a scholarship spot—and a new opportunity for head coach Mark Pope.
Perry’s departure caught many by surprise, given his Kentucky roots and potential as a long-term contributor. Still, it created flexibility for Pope, now with 12 scholarship players on board, to explore final tweaks to the roster.
In an interview with CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Pope expressed confidence in his current team but made it clear he’s not done searching.
“I’d like to play them all,” Pope said. “I have 12 guys right now that can help us. We’re trying to round out the roster and find someone who can either develop in practice as a redshirt or be a one-year veteran ready to contribute.”
While Perry’s exit was unexpected, it might turn into a blessing in disguise. If the NCAA approves a proposal to expand rosters to 15 scholarships, Kentucky could benefit even more. Regardless, Pope remains focused on building a title-contending squad.
“We need to add a couple more pieces,” he continued. “But we already have the guys who will own the minutes on the floor. All the pieces are there.”
Despite changes, Pope’s message is clear: the goal remains a national championship.
“We can get it done,” he said. “That’s our job. That’s the standard at Kentucky—nothing less.”
While the Wildcats may still add one or two more players, Pope believes the current roster already has what it takes to make a serious NCAA Tournament run.
