Kentucky men’s basketball coach Mark Pope has given a bittersweet update on the status of injured guard Jaxson Robinson. According to Pope, Robinson’s surgery on his right wrist was “perfect,” but unfortunately, his college basketball career has come to an end.
Robinson suffered the injury during Kentucky’s road win at Oklahoma on February 26, and it was later announced that he would miss the remainder of the season. Pope confirmed that Robinson underwent surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out for three months.
“The surgery was perfect,” Pope said. “I talked to him last night. He was a little tired and a little irritable. But he’s on his way back (to Kentucky) right now.”
While the news about Robinson’s surgery is positive, the fact that his college career is over is a tough pill to swallow for Kentucky fans. Robinson was a key player for the Wildcats, averaging 13 points per game this season.
Pope praised Robinson’s contributions to the team, saying, “These guys love Jax so much and Jax loves these guys so much and they’ve been on an epic journey together and it’s hard to make sense of why he doesn’t get a chance to finish this with these guys. It’s really brutal.”
Robinson’s college career spanned five seasons and four different schools, including Texas A&M, Arkansas, BYU, and Kentucky. He appeared in 120 total games with 68 starts and averaged 9.5 points per game.
Kentucky has already secured a top-8 seed in the SEC Tournament and will face Missouri in their regular-season finale on Saturday.
