Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is entering his 16th season at the helm, and despite his impressive tenure, he’s facing increased pressure to deliver a championship. According to an NFL insider, Tomlin’s job security is tied to the team’s “elite mediocrity” – a term used to describe the Steelers’ consistent ability to win games, but not quite reach the elite level.
“The Steelers have been good, but not great, for a while now,” the insider said. “They’ve won some games, made the playoffs, but they haven’t been able to get over the hump and win a Super Bowl. That’s put a lot of pressure on Mike Tomlin to deliver.”
Tomlin’s coaching record is impressive, with a 145-78-1 regular-season record and a Super Bowl XLIII championship. However, the Steelers have only made the playoffs twice in the last five seasons, and they haven’t advanced past the divisional round since 2016.
The insider believes that Tomlin’s job security is tied to the team’s ability to take the next step and become a true contender.
“Mike Tomlin is a great coach, but he’s not immune to the pressure,” the insider said. “If the Steelers don’t make a deep playoff run this season, there could be some changes made. Tomlin’s job might not be in jeopardy, but he’ll definitely be feeling the heat.”
The Steelers have made some significant offseason moves, including the signing of linebacker Elandon Roberts and the drafting of wide receiver George Pickens. However, the team still has some major question marks, particularly at the quarterback position.
As the Steelers prepare for the upcoming season, Tomlin will be under intense scrutiny. Can he lead the team to a championship, or will the Steelers’ “elite mediocrity” continue to hold them back?
