The Pittsburgh Steelers should definitely prioritize upgrading their wide receiver corps if they decide to bring back Justin Fields, according to Yahoo Sports analyst Matt Harmon. Fields’ performance last year was hindered by a lack of support from his receivers, and Harmon believes that the Steelers need to take multiple swings at the position to improve their chances of success.
The Steelers’ current receiver situation is less than ideal, with George Pickens being the only reliable option. Calvin Austin III was the only other receiver to break the 500-yard mark, and even that was just barely. Harmon’s suggestion to take multiple swings at receiver makes sense, especially considering the Steelers’ history of struggling to find consistent receivers.
In fact, the Steelers haven’t drafted a receiver in the first round since Santonio Holmes in 2006. This offseason, they should consider using free agency and the draft to upgrade their receiver corps. Even if they manage to sign or trade for a big-name receiver, they should still target a receiver on Day 1 of the draft to inject some youth into the position.
Some possible options for the Steelers could include Deebo Samuel, who has been linked to the team in trade talks. Samuel’s production was down last season, but he’s still a talented receiver who could make an impact in Pittsburgh.
