A prominent NFL writer has eaten his words after making a bold and widely criticized statement about Detroit Lions running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Greg Rosenthal, an NFL writer, tweeted last year that the difference between Gibbs, Montgomery, and the Lions’ previous running back duo of Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift was “not large.”
However, after witnessing the explosive performance of Gibbs and Montgomery in 2024, Rosenthal has admitted his mistake. The dynamic duo has established themselves as one of the top running back tandems in the league, with many observers suggesting they could go down as one of the best duos in NFL history.
Rosenthal took the opportunity to personally apologize to both players while in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. He shared on Twitter that Gibbs told him he needs to “eat that for a lot longer.” Rosenthal acknowledged that Gibbs is indeed a top-three running back in the league and that the duo is one of the best he’s seen in his lifetime.
This admission of fault and formal apology come after a season where Gibbs has proven himself to be among the league’s elite, and Montgomery has shown himself to be an essential part of Detroit’s offense. Rosenthal’s original comparison now looks off-base, and he’s taken responsibility for underestimating the talented duo.
