The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to make some significant moves in the offseason to bolster their defense, particularly at the cornerback position. With Joey Porter Jr. already on board, the Steelers are predicted to sign free agent cornerback D.J. Reed to a three-year, $43.5 million contract.
According to long-time Steelers beat reporter Mark Kaboly, Reed is the top target for the Steelers in free agency. Kaboly responded to a fan’s question on X, stating that Reed would be the largest contract given out to a free agent this year.
Reed, who played for the New York Jets last season, is considered one of the top cornerbacks in the league. He has earned a 70.0-plus PFF overall grade for six consecutive seasons and boasts a 51.28% lockdown percentage.
The signing of Reed would be a significant upgrade for the Steelers’ secondary, which has been a weakness in recent years. With Porter Jr. and Reed, the Steelers would have a formidable cornerback duo that could help shut down opposing teams’ passing attacks.
While the contract price may seem steep, the Steelers have the cap space to make it work. And with Reed’s proven track record of success, it’s likely that the Steelers would be willing to make a significant investment to bring him on board.
Only time will tell if Kaboly’s prediction comes true, but one thing is certain: the Steelers are in dire need of an upgrade at cornerback, and D.J. Reed would be an excellent addition to their roster.
