The Detroit Lions saw their postseason come to a shocking end in the Divisional Round in a loss to the Washington Commanders.
The Lions had the No. 1 seed in the NFC and had big Super Bowl aspirations, but rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels led the Commanders to a massive 45-31 upset win at Ford Field.
Since then, the Lions have seen offensive coordinator Ben Johnson become the head coach of the Chicago Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn take the head coaching job with the New York Jets.
On Tuesday, the Lions reportedly decided on the replacement for Johnson.
After reports surfaced on Monday that Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton was drawing interest, the deal has officially been done, per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
“This has now happened: John Morton is the new #Lions OC, per me and @TomPelissero,” Rapoport wrote.
Morton and Lions head coach Dan Campbell have familiarity with one another. Morton was the senior offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022, Campbell’s second season in Detroit.
Campbell and Morton also were on the New Orleans Saints staff together as assistants in 2016. Morton was the wide receivers coach and Campbell was the tight ends coach.
After Morton left the Saints, he spent time with each of the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders before going. to the Lions the first time.
Now, Campbell and Morton reunite, and he steps in to replace a big hole left by Johnson.
The Lions promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, so Campbell has wasted no time filling both coordinator roles.
