The Detroit Lions have made their fair share of questionable decisions over the years, but one move stands out as the biggest mistake. According to experts, the Lions’ decision to trade away wide receiver Kenny Golladay in 2021 was a costly error that could have been avoided.
“The Lions had a chance to keep Golladay, one of their top playmakers, and chose not to,” said NFL analyst Mike Tannenbaum. “That decision has come back to haunt them, as Golladay went on to have a successful season with the New York Giants.”
Others pointed to the Lions’ decision to draft quarterback Jared Goff’s eventual replacement, Jameson Williams, in the first round of the 2022 draft. “While Williams has shown promise, the Lions’ quarterback situation is still uncertain, and drafting Williams may have been a premature move,” said ESPN’s Matt Miller.
The coaching staff’s decision to start Jared Goff over backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld in several games last season also raised eyebrows. “Goff’s inconsistencies have been well-documented, and starting Sudfeld in certain situations may have given the Lions a better chance to win,” said Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt.
