Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Glenn was officially introduced as the new head coach of the New York Jets on Monday. Glenn, who spent four years with the Lions, was visibly emotional as he took the podium to address the media and Jets fans.
Glenn expressed his gratitude to Jets owner Woody Johnson and the entire organization for the opportunity to lead the team. He also thanked his former coaches and mentors, including Bill Parcells and Sean Payton, for their guidance and support throughout his career.
The new Jets head coach made it clear that he had his sights set on this job from the beginning. “I wanted this job,” Glenn said. “I interviewed for a number of them, but I wanted this job. When I was going through my second interviews, I wanted to make sure this was going to be the first of the second interviews, because I didn’t want to leave the building without shaking Woody’s hand and making sure we had a contract.”
Glenn acknowledged that the Jets have a talented roster, but he also emphasized the importance of building a strong team culture. “Put your seatbelts on,” Glenn said in a message to his new players. “Get ready for the ride. Put your seatbelts on and get ready for the ride. Listen, there are going to be some challenges. But challenges become opportunities.”
The Lions, meanwhile, are moving forward with Kelvin Sheppard as their new defensive coordinator. Sheppard, who has served as linebackers coach for four years, will take over the defensive play-calling duties. The Lions are still searching for a new offensive coordinator to replace Ben Johnson, who left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
