The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off a disappointing 2024 season, and if they want to avoid another disaster in 2025, they need to make some significant changes this offseason. Here are five crucial moves they should consider:
1. Upgrade the Cornerback Position
The Steelers’ secondary was a major weakness last season, and they need to address it ASAP. They should sign two new starting cornerbacks in free agency to bolster their defense. Potential targets could include Byron Murphy, Charvarious Ward, D.J. Reed, or Asante Samuel Jr.
“Cornerback is a huge need for us, and we’re going to attack it aggressively in free agency,” said Steelers GM Omar Khan. “We want to find two guys who can start for us and make an immediate impact.”
2. Acquire a Top-Notch Wide Receiver
The Steelers’ receiving corps was inconsistent last season, and they need a reliable target for their quarterback. They should trade for a proven wide receiver, such as Davante Adams, Deebo Samuel, Tyreek Hill, D.K. Metcalf, or Cooper Kupp.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve our offense, and adding a top-notch wide receiver would be a huge boost,” said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. “We’ll explore all our options, including trades and free agency.”
3. Find a New Starting Running Back
The Steelers’ running game was inefficient last season, with Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren struggling to make an impact. They should draft a new starting running back with an early pick, potentially in the second or third round.
“We need a running back who can be a workhorse for us, someone who can carry the load and make big plays,” said Tomlin. “We’ll look for that guy in the draft.”
4. Sign or Trade for a New Quarterback
The Steelers’ quarterback play was subpar last season, with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson failing to impress. They should consider signing or trading for a new quarterback, such as Sam Darnold or Geno Smith, to provide a spark under center.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve our quarterback play, and we’ll explore all our options this offseason,” said Khan. “We want to find a guy who can lead our team to victories and make plays when it matters most.”
5. Strengthen the Offensive Lin
The Steelers’ offensive line was a liability last season, struggling to protect their quarterback and open up holes for their running backs. They should prioritize strengthening their O-line through free agency or the draft.
“Our offensive line needs to be better, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen,” said Tomlin. “We’ll sign free agents, draft guys, and coach them up to make sure they’re ready to go.”
By making these five changes, the Steelers can avoid another disaster in 2025 and get back to being a competitive team in the AFC North.
