Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reaffirmed that Gabriel Martinelli remains a crucial part of his plans, despite growing competition following the signing of Raheem Sterling. Martinelli, who has been integral to Arsenal’s progress under Arteta, now faces a challenge for his starting position.
The 23-year-old Brazilian winger was a standout performer during the 2022/23 season, scoring 15 goals and becoming a key figure in Arteta’s side. However, injuries and inconsistent form over the past year have seen his influence wane. The emergence of Leandro Trossard, coupled with Sterling’s arrival on transfer deadline day, has intensified competition in Arsenal’s attacking line.
Martinelli started Arsenal’s first two matches of the new campaign but was dropped to the bench for their 1-1 draw with Brighton before the international break. As Sterling prepares to make his debut in the highly anticipated north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Arteta was asked about Martinelli’s position in the squad.
“At this level, it’s about what we need to do each week and how we can adapt to the demands,” Arteta said. “We need wingers who can go one-on-one, attack the spaces, and contribute to our goal threat. We have several players who can fill various roles in the front line, especially with some injuries affecting us.”
Despite the competition, Arteta reiterated that Martinelli possesses the qualities Arsenal needs in the attacking department. “All the players here, including Martinelli, have what it takes to perform in this team,” Arteta added.
Turning his attention to Sterling, Arteta expressed confidence in the new signing’s mindset and determination. The Arsenal boss shared that a brief phone conversation convinced him Sterling was eager to join the club’s push for silverware.
“His first words to me were, ‘I was dreaming about this call,’” Arteta revealed. “That was enough to show me how much he wanted this. Within 10 seconds, I knew we had to bring him to Arsenal.”
Mikel Arteta praised Sterling’s enthusiasm and readiness, stating, “He’s got a big smile, a lot of energy, and is eager to prove a point. His quality speaks for itself, and he’s ready to make a difference.”
